#24.

Discovering classical music is a highly pleasurable activity than will enthrall and invest a curious young person with a lifetime of musical enjoyment.
One can be spared the pains and anxieties of having to take graded music examinations and yet are passionate about music. There are no hard and fast rules, only certain broad and loose guidelines that may be applied in a timely and judicious manner for the best effect.

o1. There is no definite age to start a child on music. Once a child displays curiousity, exposure to music may begin.
o2. Passive listening and singing are the easiest start points, rather than strict instrumental instruction.
o3. Engage the natural curiousity of a child. Tell stories and inspire the child's imagination when encountering any work of music, literature, or art.
o4. An all-round exposure includes regular outings to nature parks, museums and places of interest. The first visit to the concert hall may be deferred to a later date, when the child is less restless and more receptive.
o5. The first music teacher sets the tone for a child's overall music education. So parents are advised to choose carefully!
o6. Music teachers can emphasise on the process of musical learning, rather than the end ie. examination results. Educate parents on the appreciation of music as well.
o7. Do not have unrealistic expectations on a child's abilites. Only one or two (out of thousands) will become music starlets. Most can become efficient technicians, but all should grow up as music-lovers.
o8. Always be positive about a child's efforts and regularly give encouragement and positive feedback. Empowered with this affirmation, they can soar.
o9. Encourage a child to venture beyond the "set syllabus" and discover a wider range of work and experiences. Self-learning should know no boundaries.
1o. Create a caring and loving home enviornment for the love of fellow humans, animals, nature and the arts to flourish.

The bottom line is this: You can still enjoy and appreciate classical music without the angst and trauma of examinations and competitions!
